Camping With TOTEM
Burning Man emphasizes the importance of both free self-expression and personal responsibility.
TOTEM offers opportunities to residents in both areas.
We don't want to make a bunch of rules for our residents.
And we certainly don't want the job of enforcing rules upon our friends.
But we recognize the value of providing some guidance, so residents know what to expect and what is expected of them.
The main thing we expect is that you willingly contribute more to the common good than you consume. Burning Man
runs as a gift economy. There are always a few folks who can't or won't pull their own weight, so the rest of
us need to put in a little extra.
BRC is an urban environment.
People might be trying to sleep at any hour.
Please try to keep your noise at a reasonable level at all times.
Please don't use a loud generator.
If you must, please run your generator as little as possible, and only between noon and 7pm.
TOTEM has always received excellent placement on the Esplanade in Black Rock City (BRC).
Prime real estate is limited.
We must show that we are worthy of this resource by creating wonderful interactive gifts.
Our primary gifts are healing, sanctuary, and a comfortable environment for socializing.
If you have ideas for other gifts that fit with our theme, please let us know.
Perhaps we can assist you in creating your gift.
We generally start massaging at about 10:30 am, and stop at sunset.
After dinner, we'll host a music-and-cocktails party in our Big Tent.
As the party winds down, residents and their guests are welcome to snooze in our chill area.
It costs us about $3000 each year to put TOTEM together.
We need your help to pay the bills.
If you'd like to join TOTEM, you'll be asked to pay a $100 per person membership fee.
In addition to supporting TOTEM's projects, you'll also be supporting the infrastructure
we share with the rest of our District - private toilets, hot showers, the power grid,
the commissary and residents-only lounge, etc.
CAMP JOBS
Our founder, Chuck of Arabia, provides the Big Tent with its decorations and furnishings,
a dozen massage tables, massage supplies, a big sound system, fine tunes, and beverages,
cocktails and snacks for our parties.
He arranges for storage and refurbishment of this equipment, transportation to and from the
playa, and setup / teardown supervision.
We need help with transportation and construction.
If you think you might enjoy setting up a huge tent in a challenging environment, consider joining us
the week before the festival for setup, or staying late to help with teardown.
We also need help with decorating the tent.
Once the tent is up, we need to install the flowing white fabric liner, mood lighting, power
distribution, fans & air conditioning, beds, cushions, massage tables, sound system, and signage
that make the tent work.
These jobs are done in a wind-free shaded environment, and require little brute strength.
Decorators will spend a lot of time moving ladders around and climbing up and down them.
Once the tent is fully operational, we need staff.
Our massage tables need massagers.
Our beverage service needs beverage makers.
Our cocktail bar needs bartenders.
And we could really use a couple of supervisors who just wander around making sure our visitors
and staff are happy and all's well with the world.
